Dr. Aubre De Lambert Maynard (1901-1999) was born in Georgetown, Guyana. He authored of Surgeons to the Poor: The Harlem Hospital Story in 1978. Maynard earned his B.A. (1922) from the College of the City of New York and M.D. (1926) from New York University Medical College. That same year Maynard became one of the first black interns at Harlem Hospital, spurring the resignation of several white physicians.
